Tata Punch Officially Unveiled, Launch On Oct 20, Bookings Open

The Punch gets the 1.2 NA petrol engine alone, for the time being.

Tata Motors today unveiled their newest product for India- the Tata Punch micro SUV. The Punch gets a very curated set of USPs and would appeal well to the masses. Here is everything we know of it yet.

Design

The Punch is the second product built on the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) after the Altroz. It has IMPACT 2.0 as its core design philosophy and could look more or less like a downsized Harrier, to many. The Punch is no big car, but isn’t anything tiny either. It is in fact, taller and slightly wider than the Nexon, and has a ground clearance of 187 mm. The key design highlights include a Gloss Black grille, split headlamps, wrap-around taillights with Tri-arrow LED signature, 16-inch diamond-cut alloys, and prominent body cladding. The overall stance is upright and presence well-marked.

Variants And Colours

Tata Motors has drifted off from conventions in naming the Tata Punch variants. Nowhere to be seen are the familiar XE, XM, XT etc, the micro SUV gets a bunch of ‘Personas’ as its variant names- Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative. Yes, we had last seen an Adventure persona on the flagship Safari! However, consider it a pun. The Punch Adventure persona is not something that offers you exclusivity or an added feel of premiumness, it is just a lower mid-spec variant name!

Punch will have a total of 7 colors to choose from. But these would be selectively spread across the four personas. For instance, the base-spec Pure persona is available in just two colors- Orcus White and Daytona Grey. The image below would give you a glimpse of the key equipment on offer on these personas.

The top-spec Punch stands quite competent in terms of features and equipment with the likes of 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with IRA, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic AC, puddle lamps, etc on offer. Interesting, however, is that the base-spec offers dual airbags, ABS, EBD, brake sway control, ISOFIX mounts, front power windows, 90 degrees wide-opening doors, etc as standard.

The overall interior layout stands similar to that of the Altroz. Both the cars get identical dash designs and similar equipment arrays.

Engine, Platform And Transmissions

Built on the same ALFA architecture as the Altroz, the Punch has its ground clearance considerably raised. The SUV is powered by the familiar 1.2L NA (Revotron) petrol engine, which the manufacturer claims to have been tweaked for better low-end grunt. Rated at 86 hp and 113 Nm, this engine gets Dynapro technology for better performance. A 5-speed manual and 5 AMT would be on offer. Tata claims the AMT to have had tweaks inside for better shifting in varying altitudes. The Punch also comes with engine start-stop tech for better efficiency.

Going by the manufacturer’s claims, the Punch should do the 0-60 kph run in 6.5 seconds and 0-100 in 16.5 seconds. There are no diesel or turbo petrol engines on offer at present. Tata might consider these if demands persist.

Price, Launch Date, Rivals, Bookings And Everything Else!

Tata Motors has started accepting bookings for the Punch against a payment of Rs 21,000. You can have yours configured and booked online and through Tata dealerships. The market launch is scheduled to happen on October 20th. We have had no clue on the prices yet, but suspect the car to sit below the Altroz in the ‘Forever range’. As of now, there is no direct rival to the Punch in India. The only options worth considering currently would be the KUV 100 and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. However, if Hyundai decides to launch the Casper here, the game would heat up.
