Hyundai Casper, if launched in India will rival the Tata Punch

Putting an end to eras-long wait and after multiple spy-photo leaks earlier, Hyundai has finally lifted the veils off the AX1 micro SUV, which would go by the name Casper upon launch. The first images of the production guise have now surfaced online showing the exterior design details of the upcoming micro SUV. Hyundai will launch the Casper in South Korea later this month, more details are expected to be out in the days to come.

Story Behind The Name

This Hyundai model originally had the internal codename AX1 during its development. The AX1 has been on test in Korea for quite some time now. The production model would, however, be called Casper. Casper is a highly sought-after skateboarding trick, and also the name of a city in the US. The naming could thus indicate the desirability of the product.

Dimensions

The Hyundai Casper is branded as a micro SUV, and in keeping with the same, has highly toned-down proportions. As per the available information, the Casper will be 3595 mm long, 1595 mm wide and 1575 mm tall, and have a wheelbase of 2400 mm.

Design Highlights

The Casper seems to be a winner in terms of design. Despite its wee proportions, Casper looks quite handsome. The overall design has a retro-modern flair to it. The key highlights include a clamshell bonnet, unique bumper design, evident circular elements like the fog lamps and headlamps, stylish LED DRLs doubling as turn indicators, and a prominent air dam. The Casper gets decently-sized squared-off wheel arches, alloy wheels that look straight out of some auto expo (!), rear door handles that sit on the C pillar, and a good-looking rear end with LED tail lamps.

Look (stare) at the Casper for five minutes without a blink and you will end up seeing bits of Ignis, KUV 100, Venue, etc in the overall design. Well…

Other Details: Features And Engines

Deep details of Casper’s cabin and features are yet to be known. But we expect it to be quite tech-packed and stylish. Expect a fair-sized standalone touchscreen infotainment system, sunroof, steering mounted audio controls, etc.

Korean-spec Hyundai Casper will have two petrol engines on offer- a 1.0L naturally aspirated unit producing 76 hp (most probably on the lower trims) and a 100 hp turbocharged version of the same on the top-spec trims. A 5-speed manual transmission is expected as standard while there could be a 4 AT on the higher-spec variants.

Hyundai Casper Could Be Tata Punch Rival!

While we are not sure as to when, we think Hyundai India will bring in the Casper to our shores in the future, as the micro SUV game here is slowly heating up. If launched here, the Casper will rival the upcoming Tata Punch, and will also compete with the KUV100, and Suzuki Ignis here.
