The Land Rover Discovery gets a mild design revamp and a few new features for 2021

Land Rover has launched the Discovery facelift in India with ex-showroom prices starting from Rs 88.06 lakh. The vehicle had premiered globally in November 2020. The new Discovery was pitched as full-size 7 seater flagship in the Discovery lineup, upon its global debut. The SUV has over the years gathered a fair-sized customer-crowd globally. It witnessed decent traction in the Indian market as well. The facelift now comes with the hope of boosting this further.

The facelift gets a number of noteworthy changes from its predecessor and is available in two different trim levels in the Indian market-Discovery and Discovery R Dynamic, and in three different variants- S, SE, and HSE. We are yet to know the variant-wise price lists though.

New Discovery Facelift: What’s New?

The Land Rover Discovery facelift gets a few notable changes from the model it replaces. The overall design has been fine-tuned for a higher aesthetic quotient. The headlamps get minor design tweaks, and LED Matrix tech, the bumpers have been redrawn, grille restyled and tail lamps restructured. The silhouette looks quite identical to that of its predecessor and the tailgate retains its asymmetrical design lingo. The rear now has a gloss Black strip running across the width of the car, connecting the tail lamps.

The R Dynamic looks the most butch and gets aggressive design cues in many areas of its brawn. It has stylish gloss black treatment at places like the grille, alloy wheels, bumpers, body cladding, mirrors, and roof.

On the inside, the overall design and layout remain the same as the previous car. However, the Discovery facelift witnesses a significant upgrade in its feature array. The new Discovery now gets a new 11.4 inch HD touchscreen, which as a matter of fact, is 48% larger than the one it replaces. It gets the latest-gen Pivi Pro infotainment system with the integrations for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth-based connectivity on offer. It also supports OTA updates.

Other key interior highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, redesigned air-con control with touch buttons, cabin air ionization with PM 2.5 filter, intelligent Seat Fold technology which lets you operate the seats through the central touchscreen, conventional gear selector instead of the previous rotary knob, 360-degree camera, heads up display, hands-free tailgate, panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control, and second-generation Activity key. The second-row seats have been redesigned to offer more support and comfort to the occupants and get electric operations too.

Mechanicals

The new Discovery facelift is available with three engine options in India. The P300 gets a 2.0L 4 cylinder petrol engine that produces 300 hp and 400 Nm, while the P360 gets a bigger 3.0L, 6-pot unit that churns out 360 hp and 500 Nm. The only diesel engine could be seen on the D300, a 3.0L in-line six-cylinder unit that would give the SUV 300 hp and 650 Nm. The 3.0L petrol and 3.0L diesel engines get 48V mild hybrid systems. There is a smaller diesel powerhouse on offer in some global markets, where the 3.0L engine produces 249 hp and 570Nm, which has not been brought to India. The transmission on offer is an 8-speed automatic unit and AWD is standard as well.

The major rivalry for the new Discovery facelift would be from BMW X5, Mercedes Benz GLE, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. With the Disco facelift in place, the Land Rover portfolio in India now has a total of 8 models, including the recently launched model-year updates of the Evoque, Velar, and the all-new Range Rover Sport SVR.
